The best places to visit in Munnar are spread across tea-covered hills in every direction from town. This guide to Munnar attractions covers the national park, dams, viewpoints and waterfalls, with entry fees and timings checked against official sources where available.
Munnar sits at roughly 1,600 metres in the Western Ghats of Idukki district, Kerala. Its name is usually explained as 'three rivers', after the confluence of the Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala rivers in the town. British planters cleared the surrounding Kannan Devan Hills from the late 1870s, and tea still covers most of the slopes: the Kanan Devan Hills Plantations company runs the estates and a tea museum at its Nallathanni estate just outside town.
Most sightseeing falls along a few roads. North-west of town, Eravikulam National Park protects rolling shola-grassland, the largest population of the endangered Nilgiri tahr and Anamudi, the highest peak in South India. East of town the Munnar–Top Station road passes Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and Kundala Lake before reaching Top Station on the Tamil Nadu border; DTPC Idukki runs a 'Tea Valley' bus tour along this route.
The road north towards Marayoor passes Lakkam Waterfalls and continues to the dry, rain-shadow forests of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, while the Kochi road to the south passes Attukad Waterfalls near Pallivasal. Munnar has no railway; visitors arrive by road from Kochi or Aluva, and most use taxis, jeeps or DTPC tours to reach attractions spread 2–60 km from town. Eravikulam closes for the Nilgiri tahr calving season each February–March, so check dates before planning.
