About Amritsar

The best places to visit in Amritsar cluster around the Golden Temple, with the Wagah border a short drive away. This guide to Amritsar attractions lists timings and entry fees, flagging what we could not verify.

Amritsar is the second-largest city in Punjab, about 217 km from Chandigarh and 455 km from Delhi, and only 28 km from the India–Pakistan border. The city takes its name from Amrit Sarovar, the pool around the Golden Temple, and Guru Ram Das is credited with founding it. Harmandir Sahib is the spiritual centre of Sikhism and draws well over a hundred thousand visitors a day, according to Wikipedia.

Within a few minutes' walk are Jallianwala Bagh, the site of the 1919 massacre, the Partition Museum in the Town Hall, and Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai. Further out are Gobindgarh Fort, Durgiana Temple and Ram Bagh, the garden and summer palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Panorama. Khalsa College, completed in 1911–12, is a landmark of colonial-era architecture.

The daily flag-lowering ceremony at the Attari–Wagah border is a long afternoon excursion from the city. Amritsar is also known for its food and for chessboards. Most visitors reach it by air, rail or road, and the compact old city is best covered on foot and by auto-rickshaw. Always confirm ceremony and museum timings locally, as several change seasonally or have been suspended.
