Gangtok spreads along a ridge at roughly 1,650 m in the eastern Himalayas and has been Sikkim's capital since 1894, when the ruling Chogyal moved the seat from Tumlong. It grew from a small settlement after the founding of Enchey Monastery in 1840 made it a Buddhist pilgrimage centre, and it remained the capital when Sikkim merged with India in 1975.
Today it is the base for most travel in Sikkim. Within the city, visitors can stroll the pedestrian, litter-free MG Marg, visit Enchey Monastery, the Do Drul Chorten and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, and take in Kangchenjunga views from hilltop shrines such as Ganesh Tok and Hanuman Tok. The Himalayan Zoological Park and Banjhakri Falls make easy half-day outings, while Rumtek Monastery, seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage, lies across the valley.
The most popular excursion is to the high-altitude Tsomgo Lake on the road to Nathu La, which requires a Protected Area Permit arranged through registered agencies. The climate is mild, with a heavy monsoon from June to September that can cause landslides; spring (March–May) and autumn (September–December) generally bring the clearest skies. Gangtok is reached by road from New Jalpaiguri railway station and Bagdogra airport, or via Pakyong Airport in Sikkim.
