Jodhpur is the second-largest city in Rajasthan, on the edge of the Thar Desert near the centre of the state. Rao Jodha, a Rathore Rajput chief, founded it in 1459 as the capital of the Marwar kingdom, moving the seat from nearby Mandore. The old city still circles Mehrangarh Fort and is bounded by a wall with several gates; many houses in the old town are painted in shades of blue, which gives Jodhpur its nickname, the Blue City. Most sightseeing is compact.
Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park and the stepwell Toorji Ka Jhalra are all within a short distance of one another on the fort side of town, while the Ghanta Ghar clock tower and Sardar Market sit at the heart of the old city. Umaid Bhawan Palace, part palace hotel and part museum, and the Sardar Government Museum lie to the south-east.
Mandore Gardens, the former capital with its royal cenotaphs, is about 9 km north, and Kaylana Lake is about 8 km west. Osian, an ancient temple town on the Bikaner highway, is about 69 km north and works as a half-day or full-day trip. Opening hours and ticket prices at several sites change, so check the latest before you go.
