Planning the places to visit in Manali? This guide covers Manali's main attractions, from Hadimba Devi Temple and Old Manali to Solang Valley, the Atal Tunnel and Rohtang Pass, with fees and permit rules checked against official sources where possible.
Manali lies at the northern end of the Kullu Valley, on the Beas River, in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district. It is about 270 km north of Shimla and some 540 km from Delhi. The name is traced to Manu-Alaya, the abode of the sage Manu. In local belief he recreated human life here after a great flood, and a rare temple to him stands in Old Manali.
The Kullu Valley is often called the Valley of the Gods, and the 16th-century Hadimba Devi Temple in the deodar forest above town honours Manali's presiding goddess. British settlers planted the first apple orchards, and tourism grew quickly after independence. Today the town combines a busy Mall Road, Tibetan monasteries, the hot springs of Vashisht and the cafe lanes of Old Manali. It is also the gateway to the high mountains.
Solang Valley offers skiing and paragliding, the Rohtang Pass sits at 3,980 m, and since 2020 the Atal Tunnel has shortened the road to Lahaul. Himachal Tourism names two peak seasons, April to July and October to December. Summer temperatures are around 22–30 °C, while December and January can fall below −5 °C with plentiful snow. The monsoon peaks in July and August and can bring landslides.
The nearest airport is at Bhuntar, about 50 km away, and there are regular buses from Delhi and Chandigarh.
