Darjeeling sits at an average elevation of about 2,045 metres in the Eastern Himalaya, in the northernmost part of West Bengal. Nepal lies to the west, Bhutan to the east and Sikkim to the north, and Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, is visible to the north on clear days.
The town is best known for its tea estates, among them Happy Valley, which dates to 1854, and for the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the 610 mm gauge Toy Train that opened in 1881 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Most sightseeing falls into a few clusters. In town, Chowrasta and Observatory Hill with the Mahakal temple are within walking distance, while the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park share Jawahar Parbat.
Jalapahar has the Japanese Peace Pagoda. South toward Ghum, the road passes Batasia Loop and Yiga Choeling Monastery, and the Rock Garden and Ganga Maya Park lie in the valley below. The usual dawn excursion is by jeep to Tiger Hill, about 11 km away in the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, for sunrise on Kanchenjunga. Darjeeling is reached by road from Siliguri (about 77 km) with Bagdogra airport about 90 km away, and New Jalpaiguri is the nearest main railhead.
