The best places to visit in Shillong include city sights, nearby waterfalls and day trips to Sohra, Mawlynnong and Dawki. This guide to Shillong attractions gives timings and entry fees, flagging anything not confirmed.
Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya and the headquarters of East Khasi Hills district, spread across the Khasi Hills at an elevation of about 1,495 to 1,965 metres. The British called it the Scotland of the East, and it became capital of Assam in 1874 and of Meghalaya when the state was created on 21 January 1972. The climate is subtropical highland, with cool summers and mild winters, and heavy rain from June to October.
Within the city, Ward's Lake and the Don Bosco Museum are the easiest stops, with Iewduh market and Police Bazar for everyday city life. On the nearer outskirts, Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak lie to the south and Umiam Lake to the north on the Guwahati road, about 100 km from the city.
Most visitors then spend a day or two on trips: Sohra (Cherrapunji) has Nohkalikai Falls and Mawsmai Cave, with the Double Decker Living Root Bridge at Nongriat reached by a long stair trek from Tyrna. Mawlynnong and Dawki, near the Bangladesh border, are long day trips, so allow time on winding roads. Tickets and hours at several sites are not published officially, so confirm locally.
