Mattupetty Dam
A concrete gravity dam and reservoir about 10 km from Munnar on the Top Station road, with DTPC-run boating on the lake.
Overview
Mattupetty Dam is the first major stop on the Munnar–Top Station road. Its reservoir is the main place for boating near Munnar.
Mattupetty Dam stands in the Kannan Devan Hills roughly 10.5 km from Munnar bus stand, on the road that continues to Echo Point, Kundala and Top Station. Built in the late 1940s under Kerala State Electricity Board engineers, it is a concrete gravity dam 83.35 metres high and 237.74 metres long, storing water for hydroelectric generation. The reservoir behind it is edged by tea estates and forest, and wild animals are sometimes seen along the shore.
For most visitors the main draw is boating. DTPC Idukki lists speed boats, slow boats and a larger pontoon boat, operating from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm every day. Pedal boats are also mentioned by Kerala Tourism. The dam top and the lake shore are popular photo stops. Nearby is the Indo-Swiss Dairy Farm (Mattupetty Livestock Research Centre), set up as a collaboration between India and Switzerland for cattle breeding research.
Mattupetty is the first stop on DTPC Idukki's Tea Valley tour and is easily combined with Echo Point and Kundala Lake in a half-day trip. The area is at its most pleasant from October to March.
