The best places to visit in Puri combine a pilgrimage city, a Blue Flag beach and day trips to Konark, Chilika and Raghurajpur. This guide to Puri attractions notes entry rules, fees and timings where official sources state them.
Puri sits on the Bay of Bengal in Odisha, about 60 km south of Bhubaneswar, and is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites of Hinduism. The 12th-century Jagannath Temple dominates the town, and the Ratha Yatra in June or July draws more than a million devotees. Only Hindus are admitted into the temple, according to the temple administration, so visitors of other faiths can see it from the street and spend their time elsewhere in the city.
Puri Beach, also called Golden Beach, holds Blue Flag certification and hosts sand-art displays and the Puri Beach Festival. The Gundicha Temple, about 3 km away, is the destination of the Ratha Yatra, and the laterite Atharanala Bridge marks the town's entrance on the Bhubaneswar road.
Day trips reach well beyond town: Konark Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about 35 km north-east with Chandrabhaga Beach nearby; the craft village of Raghurajpur is about 14 km south; Pipili is known for appliqué; Sakshigopal lies on the highway towards Bhubaneswar; and Chilika Lake, a Ramsar-listed lagoon, is reached from Satapada, about 50 km away. The climate is tropical and humid, with the cooler months from November to February most comfortable.
Puri has a railway station and a road link with Bhubaneswar, whose airport is the nearest.
