Attukal Waterfalls, Munnar

Attukal Waterfalls is the closest large waterfall to Munnar town, at its best from the monsoon into winter. Trails around it make it a popular short trek.

Attukal (also spelled Attukad or Attukadu) Waterfalls tumble down a forested hillside between Munnar and Pallivasal, south of Munnar town off the road to Kochi. Kerala Tourism describes the area as a trekking destination, with trails running beside streams through the hills and valleys around the falls.

The falls are seasonal in character: they are at their most powerful in the south-west monsoon and remain attractive through the winter, when the surrounding hills are green; by late summer the flow drops considerably. Short paths lead to viewpoints closer to the water. Kerala Tourism notes toilets and food and water stalls at the site. Access is by a narrow side road from the Munnar–Kochi road near Pallivasal; Wikivoyage advises that it needs an experienced driver.

Rocks near the water are slippery, especially in the monsoon, and currents can be strong. No official entry fee or visiting hours are published; an unofficial website states there is no entry fee. A visit of an hour or two, or a longer walk on the trails, fits easily into a day that also includes Pallivasal or the Kochi road viewpoints.
