Agra lies on the Yamuna in western Uttar Pradesh and was the capital of the Mughal empire for much of the 16th and 17th centuries, until Shah Jahan moved his court to Delhi. Babur laid out riverside gardens here, including the Ram Bagh of 1528. Akbar rebuilt Agra Fort in red sandstone from 1565 and founded the short-lived capital of Fatehpur Sikri, 37 km to the west.
Jahangir completed his father's tomb at Sikandra, and Nur Jahan built the marble tomb of her father, Itimad-ud-Daulah. Shah Jahan's Taj Mahal, the mausoleum of Mumtaz Mahal, is the city's defining monument. Other Mughal gardens and tombs line both banks of the river, from Mehtab Bagh opposite the Taj to Chini Ka Rauza with its glazed tiles. The Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Old Agra around the Jama Masjid and Kinari Bazaar is known for its markets, marble inlay work and the local sweet petha. The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, while other monuments open daily from sunrise to sunset. Most monument tickets include an Agra Development Authority toll, and foreigners who buy the Taj ticket do not pay the toll again at other ADA-tolled monuments the same day. UP Tourism gives October to March as the best season.
Summers are extremely hot and winter mornings often foggy. Agra is linked to Delhi by the Yamuna Expressway and by fast trains to Agra Cantonment station.
