Rishikesh lies on the right bank of the Ganges in Dehradun district, Uttarakhand, at about 340 m above sea level, where the river leaves the Himalayan foothills. Hindu tradition links it to sages and to Rama's penance after defeating Ravana, and the town has long been a pilgrim stop on the way to the Char Dham shrines.
It is also known as the 'Yoga Capital of the World': the International Yoga Festival has been held here each March since 1999, and the Beatles' 1968 stay at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram added to its fame. Sightseeing splits into three parts. In town, Triveni Ghat and Bharat Mandir are the main stops.
Upriver in Swargashram, Parmarth Niketan holds a daily Ganga Aarti, and the old Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula bridges, both now restricted or closed, are the best-known landmarks. Outside, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple sits about 32 km away in the forest, Vashishta Gufa lies along the Badrinath road and Rajaji National Park's Chilla zone is a short drive from both Rishikesh and Haridwar. Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar is a common day trip.
