About Madurai

The best places to visit in Madurai range from the Meenakshi Amman Temple to Nayak palaces, Jain hills and rock-cut shrines. This guide to Madurai attractions covers timings and fees checked against official sources where available, and flags what is unconfirmed.

Madurai sits on the plains of the Vaigai river at about 134 m elevation, in southern Tamil Nadu. Wikipedia describes a documented history of more than 2,500 years, and the city served as capital of the Pandya dynasty and later of the Nayaks. Its nicknames include Thoongaa Nagaram, the city that never sleeps, and the Temple City.

The old city is arranged around the Meenakshi Sundaraswarar Temple, whose gopurams dominate the skyline, and most sightseeing lies within a few kilometres. Close to the temple are Koodal Azhagar Temple, the Kazimar Big Mosque and, to the south-east, Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, the surviving part of a 17th-century palace. East of the centre are the Gandhi Memorial Museum in the Tamukkam Palace and the large Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam tank.

Beyond the city, Thiruparankundram, the rock-cut Murugan shrine, is about 8 km away; Samanar Hills, with Jain carvings, is about 10 km west; and Alagar Koil is in the northern foothills. The Kalaignar Centenary Library, opened in 2023, is a modern addition. Madurai International Airport is about 12 km from the city, and Madurai Junction is a major rail hub. Festivals such as Chithirai in April–May draw very large crowds, so book accommodation early if you visit then.
