Overview
Nahargarh Fort is among the best Jaipur attractions for views: a ridge-top fort whose terraces look straight down on the Pink City. Here are its fees and hours.
Nahargarh sits on the edge of the Aravalli ridge that frames the north of Jaipur. It was built mainly in 1734 by Sawai Jai Singh II as a retreat and part of the defences that link it with Jaigarh and Amber. Originally called Sudarshangarh, it took its name from Nahar Singh Bhomia, to whom a shrine inside is dedicated. The fort never came under attack; in 1857 Sawai Ram Singh moved European residents here for their safety, and it was extended in 1868.
Its main building is the Madhavendra Bhawan, built for Sawai Madho Singh II, with a suite for the king and nine matching apartments for his queens connected by corridors decorated with murals. The fort also has large water tanks and two step wells. From the terraces the whole walled city spreads below, which makes Nahargarh a popular sunset and evening spot.
The Department of Archaeology & Museums runs the fort and includes it in the composite ticket; attractions such as the Jaipur Wax Museum and the RTDC Padao cafeteria inside charge separately. The road up is steep and winding, so most visitors drive or take a taxi, and it combines well with Jaigarh on the same ridge.
