Overview
Jantar Mantar is one of Jaipur's two UNESCO sites: an open-air observatory of giant stone instruments beside the City Palace. Here are its official fees and hours.
Sawai Jai Singh II, founder of Jaipur, built five observatories, at Delhi, Jaipur, Mathura, Ujjain and Varanasi. The official portal dates the Jaipur one to 1728–1734. Rajasthan Tourism calls it the largest of the five. It holds 19 masonry instruments for measuring time, tracking stars and planets, and finding celestial coordinates in the horizon, equatorial and ecliptic systems.
The best known is the Samrat Yantra, a huge equatorial sundial whose shadow moves visibly across its graduated arcs. Others include the Jai Prakash and Ram yantras and a set of zodiac instruments. The site was restored in the 19th century and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 31 July 2010, which UNESCO describes as the most significant and best-preserved historic observatory in India. An interpretation centre explains how the instruments work.
The observatory is next to the City Palace and a few minutes from Hawa Mahal, and is included in the composite monuments ticket. There is little shade, so visit in the morning or late afternoon and consider a guide or audio guide to make sense of the instruments.
