Overview
Albert Hall is the Jaipur attraction to see Rajasthan's crafts and paintings in one place, inside a landmark Indo-Saracenic building. Here are its official fees and hours.
The Government Central Museum, better known as Albert Hall, is the state museum of Rajasthan. The Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, laid its foundation stone on 6 February 1876; it was designed by Samuel Swinton Jacob in the Indo-Saracenic style and opened as a public museum in 1887. Maharaja Ram Singh had planned it as a town hall, but his successor Madho Singh II made it a museum of Jaipur's arts, set in the new Ram Niwas Garden.
Colonel Thomas Hendley assembled the collection, and his ledger still underpins the inventory. Galleries hold metalware, woodwork, carpets, stone and metal sculpture, arms and armour, ivory and a large collection of miniature paintings from the Bundi, Kota, Kishangarh, Udaipur and Jaipur schools. The official portal highlights the Egyptian mummy and a Persian garden carpet. The museum was renovated in 2008.
The building is lit up in the evening and is at its most photogenic after dark, and Ram Niwas Garden around it also has a zoo, a bird park and a theatre. It is run by the Department of Archaeology & Museums and included in the composite ticket, which can be bought here.
