Amber Fort is the grandest of the places to visit in Jaipur: a hilltop palace of courtyards, mirror halls and gateways above Maota Lake. Here are its official ticket prices, hours and practical tips.
Amber (Amer) Fort was the seat of the Kachhwaha Rajputs before the capital moved to Jaipur in 1727. Rajasthan Tourism dates the present palace to Raja Man Singh I, who began building in 1592, with later additions by Mirza Raja Jai Singh I and Sawai Jai Singh II. Built in red sandstone and white marble, it blends Rajput and Mughal styles and is part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan World Heritage listing.
The palace rises in four levels, each with its own courtyard: the Diwan-e-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), the Diwan-e-Khas, the Sheesh Mahal or Jai Mandir with its mirror-inlaid walls and ceilings, and the Sukh Niwas, cooled by air passing over a water channel. Near Ganesh Pol stands the Shila Devi temple. The fort sits below Jaigarh Fort, to which it is linked by walls and passages, and looks down on Maota Lake and the old town of Amer.
Visitors walk up the ramp from the lake or drive to the upper gate; the climb and the many stairs inside make comfortable shoes important. The monument is run by Rajasthan's Department of Archaeology & Museums and is covered by the composite monuments ticket. It is Jaipur's busiest sight, so arrive at opening time to see the courtyards before tour groups.
