Overview
The City Palace is one of the essential Jaipur attractions: a working royal residence whose courtyards and galleries form a museum. These are the official prices and hours from the palace museum.
The City Palace was begun by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II soon after he founded Jaipur in 1727 and was completed in 1732, with later rulers adding to it. It combines Rajput and Mughal architecture across a series of courtyards and remained the seat of the Jaipur rulers until 1949. The royal family still lives in the seven-storeyed Chandra Mahal.
Most visitors see the courtyards and galleries of the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum: the Mubarak Mahal, built as a reception palace, the Diwan-i-Khas with its two giant silver water vessels, and the Pritam Niwas Chowk with four painted gateways representing the seasons, the best known being the Peacock Gate. Rajasthan Tourism notes collections of royal costumes, shawls and textiles and a display of Rajput weaponry in the Maharani's Palace.
The museum's own site says the Textile Gallery in Mubarak Mahal is closed for restoration from 27 March 2026. A separate, pricier Royal Tour takes visitors into parts of the Chandra Mahal with a personal guide. The palace is a short walk from Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal, so the three are easily combined. Parking is only at Gate 2 near Jaleb Chowk, and the nearest metro station is Badi Chaupar.
