No list of places to visit in Jaipur is complete without Hawa Mahal, the latticed 'Palace of Winds' on Siredeori Bazaar. Here are its official fees, hours and history.
Hawa Mahal was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh and designed by Lal Chand Usta. The official portal says the facade was modelled on the crown of Krishna. The pyramid-shaped front, about 87 feet (26.5 m) high, rises five storeys from Siredeori Bazaar. Each storey has its own name: Sharad Mandir, Ratan Mandir, Vichitra Mandir, Prakash Mandir and Hawa Mandir.
Hundreds of small latticed jharokhas let the women of the royal household watch processions such as Teej and Gangaur without being seen, and draw breezes through the building. The portal gives 365 windows while Wikipedia gives 953, so counts vary by source. What most people photograph is actually the back of the building.
The entrance is from the City Palace side, where courtyards, ramps and narrow stairs lead up to the top floors and views over Jantar Mantar, the City Palace and the bazaars. The monument is run by the Department of Archaeology & Museums, which also keeps a small archaeological museum in the courtyard. It is included in the composite monuments ticket. The facade looks best in early morning light from the cafes across the road.
