Overview
Birla Mandir is the Jaipur attraction to see modern marble craftsmanship: a white temple below Moti Dungri that glows when lit at night.
The Lakshmi-Narayan Temple, known as Birla Mandir, stands on a raised platform at the base of Moti Dungri hill in south Jaipur. Rajasthan Tourism says it was commissioned by the Birla industrial family and built in 1988 entirely of white marble. It is dedicated to Vishnu (Narayan) and Lakshmi, whose images in the sanctum are each carved from a single block of marble.
The walls and pillars carry carvings of mythological scenes and figures, and the temple's three domes are described by Rajasthan Tourism as representing three religions followed in India. A small museum in the complex displays belongings of the Birla family. Compared with Jaipur's forts and palaces it is a modern building, but its gleaming marble is a striking sight, particularly in the evening when the temple is floodlit.
The Moti Dungri Ganesh temple, one of the city's most visited shrines, is next door, and the castle-like palace on the hilltop above, modelled on a Scottish castle, still belongs to the royal family. As an active temple, it expects visitors to dress modestly and leave footwear outside.
