Ram Bagh Summer Palace and Ranjit Singh Museum

Maharaja Ranjit Singh's summer palace in the Ram Bagh garden in Amritsar, now a museum of Sikh arms, paintings, coins and manuscripts, with a Rs 10 ticket.

Overview

Ram Bagh Summer Palace is a Sikh Empire monument among the places to visit in Amritsar, now a museum. Timings and fee are from the district website.

Ram Bagh, also called Company Bagh after British annexation, is a garden built under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, laid out on the Mughal pattern of Lahore's Shalimar Bagh. Construction ran from 1819 to 1831 and the garden is named after Guru Ram Das, the founder of Amritsar. The summer palace at its centre is a state-protected and nationally important monument, and Wikipedia notes a long legal dispute that has hurt its conservation.

The Amritsar district website says the former palace houses the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum, established in 1977, with weapons, paintings of the royal court, historical coins and manuscripts, and a painting of Lahore. Entry is Rs 10 per person; the museum is open 10 AM to 5 PM and closed on Mondays and public holidays. It is about 1.5 km from Amritsar Junction. This is a different place from the Ram Bagh in Agra. Allow time to walk the grounds.

Check the condition of the garden locally.
