Jallianwala Bagh
A 7-acre memorial garden beside the Golden Temple where British troops fired on a crowd on 13 April 1919. Bullet-marked walls, the Martyrs' Well and a gallery mark the site.
Overview
Jallianwala Bagh is one of the most important historical places to visit in Amritsar, a memorial garden near the Golden Temple. This guide covers timings, what you can see and the planned renovation.
Jallianwala Bagh is a walled public garden of about seven acres a short walk from the Golden Temple. On Baisakhi, 13 April 1919, Brigadier General R.E.H. Dyer led troops into the garden and ordered them to fire on a crowd that had gathered there; the only exit was a narrow lane, and many people were killed or injured. The site is now a national memorial managed by the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Trust. Visitors walk in through the same narrow passage.
Inside are bullet-marked walls, the Martyrs' Well where people jumped to escape, the 30-foot Flame of Liberty memorial and a Martyrs' Gallery with stories of freedom fighters. Incredible India lists a daily light-and-sound show, and a 2020 renovation of the memorial added new entry and exit points, improved lighting and a redesigned well. Wikipedia says the memorial will be renovated again between 2025 and 2027, so check on the day which areas are open.
The memorial is quiet and sombre; allow time for the gallery and a slow walk through the garden.
