Khalsa College, Amritsar
A historic Indo-Saracenic college building on a 300-acre campus on the Grand Trunk Road, with a Sikh History Research Centre.
Overview
Khalsa College is a historic building among the architectural places to visit in Amritsar. It is a working campus; verify visitor access before going.
Khalsa College was founded in 1892 by Singh Sabha reformers to bring higher education to Sikhs and Punjabis, with funding from several princely states. Its main building, completed in 1911–12 on a campus of about 300 acres, is a mix of British, Mughal and Sikh styles that Wikipedia describes as Indo-Saracenic. The campus is around eight kilometres from the city centre on the Amritsar–Lahore highway, next to Guru Nanak Dev University.
The college houses the Sikh History Research Centre, founded in 1930 with a library and art galleries; Wikipedia lists 6,397 books, 375 paintings, 601 manuscripts, newspapers, coins and weapons. It is a working college, so access for visitors is not guaranteed and we found no published visitor timings or fees. Treat it as an architecture stop and ask at the gate before planning around the research centre.
