Alagar Koil (Kallalagar Temple)
A hill-foot Vishnu temple north-east of Madurai whose deity travels to the city each Chithirai festival.
Overview
Alagar Koil is a Divya Desam Vishnu temple at the foot of the Alagar hills outside Madurai. This guide covers its architecture, festival and the details we could not verify.
Kallalagar Temple at Alagar Kovil is a Vishnu temple in the foothills north-east of Madurai. The deity is Kallalagar, also called Sundararaja Perumal, with his consort Kalyana Sundaravalli. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams and is praised in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham. The temple covers about 2 acres inside granite walls and has a seven-tier gopuram.
Daily ablutions use water from Noopura Ganga, a spring on the hill above, since water from other sources is believed to discolour the image. The main festival is the Chithirai Thiruvizha in April–May, in which Alagar travels from the temple through the Kallar region to Madurai, where very large crowds gather, linking the temple to the Meenakshi wedding festivities. Commons photographs show finely carved gopuram sculptures.
