Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai
The walled Meenakshi Sundaraswarar temple complex in the old city, known for its 14 gopurams, the Golden Lotus tank and the Hall of Thousand Pillars.
Overview
Meenakshi Amman Temple is the main reason many travellers come to Madurai. This guide gives the darshan timings from the official HR&CE site, reported special darshan prices and what to expect inside.
Meenakshi Sundaraswarar Temple stands on the south bank of the Vaigai in the old centre of Madurai and is dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi and her consort Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva. The complex is entered through towering gopurams: there are 14 in all, and the southern one, built in the late 16th century, rises about 52 m (170 ft).
Inside, the Potramarai Kulam, the Golden Lotus tank, measures roughly 50 m by 37 m, and the Ayiram Kaal Mandapam, the Hall of Thousand Pillars, actually holds 985 carved pillars. The temple is run by the Tamil Nadu HR&CE department, whose website gives the darshan timings. The main festival is the Meenakshi Tirukalyanam in the Tamil month of Chithirai (April–May), the ceremonial wedding of the goddess, when the city fills with pilgrims.
The official site notes that the timing of daily poojas can change during festivals. Because it is an active place of worship, visitors are expected to dress modestly, and secondary sources report that cameras and mobile phones are not allowed inside; the official pages we could load do not state the current policy, so check at the entrance. Allow at least two to three hours, longer if you want to see the art museum and the mandapams unhurriedly.
