Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam
A large Nayak-era temple tank with a central island shrine, east of the city, famous for its float festival.
Overview
The Teppakulam is one of the largest temple tanks in South India and a calm stop in Madurai. This guide covers its history, the float festival and what we could not confirm.
The Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam is a large temple tank in Vandiyur, about 3 km east of the Meenakshi Temple. It is attached to a Mariamman temple and is connected to the Vaigai river by a system of underground channels, which fill it. Twelve granite steps line the tank, dating from the Nayak period, and a central pavilion called the Maiya Mandapam holds a Vinayaka shrine and a small garden.
The tank is best known for the Teppa Thiruvizha, the float festival held in the Tamil month of Thai during Thai Pusam, when images of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar are taken round the tank on a decorated float. Outside festival time the tank is usually seen from the surrounding platform and is lit in the evening. Wikipedia notes its entry relies on a single source, and we found no official page with visiting hours, a fee or rules, so those are recorded as unknown.
It is an easy stop on a day that also covers the Nayak palace and the Gandhi museum.
