The Gandhi Memorial Museum occupies the Tamukkam Palace, built around 1670 by Rani Mangammal of the Nayak dynasty. The palace was gifted to the All India Gandhi Smarak Nidhi in 1955, with about 13 acres of land, and the museum was opened by Jawaharlal Nehru on 15 April 1959.
