Overview
Saheliyon-ki-Bari is one of Udaipur's gentler attractions: an 18th-century garden of fountains and pavilions built for the royal women of Mewar.
Saheliyon-ki-Bari, the Courtyard or Garden of the Maidens, was laid out between 1710 and 1734 by Maharana Sangram Singh II as a retreat for the royal women. Tradition says the Maharana designed it himself and gave it to his queen, who arrived with 48 maids at her marriage, so they could spend time away from court politics. The garden lies in the northern part of the city, near the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake.
Its features include fountains, several of them spouting from marble elephant trunks, kiosks and chhatris, marble elephants, a lotus pool and lawns shaded by trees and flowering plants. There is also a small museum. Rajasthan Tourism lists it among Udaipur's main sights, and it is a calm, green stop between the lakes and Moti Magri. Being a compact garden, it takes under an hour to walk around, so it pairs well with Fateh Sagar and Moti Magri nearby.
