Overview
Fateh Sagar Lake is where Udaipur comes out in the evening: a hill-ringed lake with an island park and a lakeside promenade.
Fateh Sagar is an artificial lake to the north of Lake Pichola, to which it is connected by a canal. Maharana Jai Singh first built it in 1678; after floods washed away the earthen bund, Maharana Fateh Singh built the Connaught Dam in 1889 to mark the visit of the Duke of Connaught, enlarging the lake, which was later renamed after him. Hills and woodland surround the lake.
It has three islands: Nehru Park, the largest, reached by motor boat; a smaller island with a public park and a water-jet fountain; and the island of the Udaipur Solar Observatory, which Rajasthan Tourism describes as the only island observatory in India. The road along the embankment, known locally as Fateh Sagar Pal, is a popular evening promenade, with views of the Monsoon Palace on its hill to the west.
Moti Magri, with the Maharana Pratap memorial, overlooks the lake, and Saheliyon-ki-Bari is close by. Besides tourism, the lake is an important source of drinking water and groundwater recharge for Udaipur, and its masonry dam has a spillway that releases monsoon floodwater.
