Jag Mandir is the Udaipur attraction you reach by boat: a 17th-century island palace on Lake Pichola. Here is how to get there and what the excursion costs.
Jag Mandir occupies an island at the southern end of Lake Pichola. Its construction is credited to three Maharanas of Mewar; Rajasthan Tourism says work began in 1620 and was completed around 1652, and it is named after Maharana Jagat Singh I. The royal family used it as a summer resort and for parties, and it is also called the Lake Garden Palace.
In 1623 Prince Khurram, later the emperor Shah Jahan, stayed here while in revolt against his father Jahangir; Rajasthan Tourism repeats the tradition that the palace inspired the Taj Mahal. The island has gardens, courtyards and pavilions, the domed Gul Mahal and a row of carved stone elephants along the water's edge. Inside the Gol Mahal, the Jagriti exhibition uses archival photographs and paintings to trace the palace's history.
Today Jag Mandir is run by the HRH Group as a heritage venue with an all-day cafe and the Picholi Bar, and it also hosts private events. Visitors reach it on the HRH excursion boats from Rameshwar Ghat in the City Palace complex, which stop at the island, with regular and sunset departures. Timings change with the season and may be changed without notice, so check before booking.
