Overview
Jagdish Temple is one of the essential places to visit in Udaipur's old city: a richly carved Vishnu temple of 1651 steps from the City Palace.
Jagdish Temple was built by Maharana Jagat Singh I and completed in 1651, and it has been in worship ever since. Originally the temple of Jagannath Rai, it is now known as Jagdish-ji and is dedicated to Vishnu. It stands on a tall terrace at a junction of old-city lanes just north of the City Palace, and 32 marble steps lead up to it past a brass image of Garuda, Vishnu's mount.
The double-storey mandapa (hall) joins a sanctum with an ambulatory, topped by a spire nearly 79 ft high, making it the largest temple in Udaipur. Its walls are covered in bands of carving showing dancers, elephants, horses and deities. Rajasthan Tourism describes it as an example of Indo-Aryan architecture with carved pillars, decorated ceilings and painted walls. The annual Rath Yatra is its biggest festival.
Because it is an active temple, visitors should dress modestly, remove shoes and follow rules on photography inside the sanctum. The steps and forecourt are busy, and the lanes around are lined with shops and cafes on the way to Gangaur Ghat and Bagore-ki-Haveli.
