Nohkalikai Falls
A 340 m plunge waterfall near Sohra (Cherrapunji), the tallest of its type in India, dropping into a green pool.
Overview
Nohkalikai Falls is the headline stop on a Sohra day trip from Shillong. This guide covers the 340 m drop, timings and when the flow is strongest.
Nohkalikai Falls drops about 340 m (1,115 ft) from a small plateau near Sohra (Cherrapunji) in the East Khasi Hills, and Wikipedia calls it the tallest plunge waterfall in India. It is fed by rain collected on the plateau above, so the flow weakens in the dry months from December to February. The plunge pool below has an unusual green colour.
The name recalls the legend of Ka Likai, a woman who ran off the plateau edge after learning her child had been killed by her second husband. Meghalaya Tourism places the falls about 7.5 km from Sohra, roughly 79 km from Shillong Airport, with a viewpoint reached by a short drive from Sohra town, and lists opening daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. It also recommends a local guide and suggests October to December for the best sight.
From Shillong it is a long day trip combined with Mawsmai Cave and other Sohra sights. Fee information was not found on the official page, and clouds often hide the falls, so an early start helps.
