Mawsmai Cave
An illuminated limestone cave near Sohra with about 150 m of passages, stalactites and narrow squeezes.
Overview
Mawsmai Cave is the easiest cave to visit on a Sohra day trip from Shillong. This guide covers its passages, how far it is and when to go.
Mawsmai Cave is a limestone cave in Mawsmai village, about 6 km from Cherrapunji town and roughly 58 km from Shillong. Meghalaya Tourism describes about 150 m of illuminated passages suitable for beginners, with stalactites, stalagmites, narrow passages and a forest walk to the entrance, and recommends a local guide. Its page also mentions fossils visible on the walls and narrow squeezes and crawl spaces.
Expect to duck and turn sideways in places, and wear shoes with grip as the floor can be wet. Allow about an hour including the walk in. The best season is October to April, when the weather is cool and dry; in heavy rain the passages can be wet. It is usually combined with Nohkalikai Falls and other Sohra sights on a day trip from Shillong. The official page states it does not specify entry fees or timings, and blog fee figures vary widely, so no amount is stored.
