Shillong Peak
At about 1,965 m, the highest point in Meghalaya, with panoramic views over Shillong and, on clear days, the plains of Bangladesh.
Overview
Shillong Peak is the best-known viewpoint among the places to visit in Shillong. This guide covers how to get there, the ID and camera rules at the gate, and when the view is clear.
Shillong Peak is the highest point in Meghalaya, at about 1,965 m above sea level, roughly 10 km south of Shillong city. Meghalaya Tourism describes views of the city, the surrounding hills, distant waterfalls and, in clear weather, the plains of Bangladesh. The summit can be reached by a 20 to 30 minute drive via Upper Shillong or the Jowai Road, or by a moderate cobbled trek; a cab from central Shillong takes about 40 minutes.
The peak sits inside an Indian Air Force radar station, so visitors must show valid photo ID and cameras are surrendered at the entry gate. The official page recommends September or October to March, when skies are clear, and advises against visiting during the monsoon, when fog hides the view. The same road passes close to Elephant Falls, so the two are commonly combined in a half-day. Opening hours and any fee were not found on the official page.
