Bharat Mandir

A Vishnu temple in Rishikesh's old town, attributed to Adi Shankaracharya's 12th-century rebuilding, near Triveni Ghat.

Overview

Bharat Mandir is an old Vishnu temple in the heart of Rishikesh. This guide covers its history, official timings and how to visit.

Bharat Mandir is one of the oldest temples in Rishikesh, in the old town near Triveni Ghat. The Ministry of Tourism's Incredible India page says the main structure is attributed to Adi Guru Shankaracharya in the 12th century and was rebuilt after Timur's invasion of 1398. Its presiding deity is Lord Hrishikesh Narayan, a form of Vishnu, shown as a five-foot idol of black granite called Saligramam.

The page describes a sixteen-cornered exterior with nine domes arranged in rows of three, and a top stone weighing 125 tons. The temple is run as an active shrine, with morning and evening darshan breaks. Incredible India lists the hours as 5:00 am to 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm, but does not state a fee, and we could not confirm one. Remove your footwear, dress modestly and expect closed doors in the middle of the day.

It is close to Triveni Ghat, so it makes sense to pair the two in the morning or before the evening aarti. Festivals such as Basant Panchami see extra activity.
