Rajaji National Park (Chilla Zone)

An 820 sq km national park and tiger reserve in the Sivalik hills, with an elephant-rich Chilla safari zone about 20 km from Rishikesh.

Overview

Rajaji National Park is the main wildlife stop near Rishikesh and Haridwar. This guide covers the Chilla zone, its wildlife and the fees we could find.

Rajaji National Park covers about 820 sq km of the Sivalik hills across Haridwar, Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal districts. It began as the Rajaji Sanctuary in 1948; three sanctuaries, Chilla, Motichur and Rajaji, were merged into one park in 1983, and it became a tiger reserve in 2015. The Ganges runs through the park and divides it into two parts.

Its terrain of sal forest, grassland and river bed rises from about 300 to 1,400 m. It is best known for Asian elephants, and it also holds tigers, leopards, sloth bears, several kinds of deer and more than 315 bird species. The Chilla zone, nearest to Rishikesh and Haridwar, has a 36 km jeep safari circuit; an unofficial operator site puts the gate about 20 km from Rishikesh and 6 km from Haridwar. Safaris run in open jeeps (gypsies).

The fees we found come only from a tour-operator website that says it is not the official site, so treat them as indicative and check booking details with the Uttarakhand forest department. Monsoon closures and season dates are not confirmed here.
