St. Philomena's Cathedral
Neo-Gothic Catholic cathedral with twin spires, officially the Cathedral of St Joseph and St Philomena.
Overview
St. Philomena's Cathedral is a Neo-Gothic Catholic church in Mysuru and one of the city's best-known landmarks. This guide covers the architecture, visiting etiquette and what is nearby.
St. Philomena's Cathedral, officially the Cathedral of St Joseph and St Philomena, is the Catholic cathedral of the Diocese of Mysore. The church was built in the 1930s in the Neo-Gothic style and is recognisable by its two tall spires, which rise above the surrounding streets of Mysuru. A statue of St Philomena stands in front of the building.
Inside, the nave has tall arches and stained-glass windows, and a crypt lies beneath the main altar. The cathedral is an active place of worship, so services take place through the week and on Sundays; visitors are expected to stay quiet and respect prayer times. Photography is usually fine outside, but check the rules inside and avoid flash.
The cathedral sits a few kilometres north of Mysore Palace, so it fits easily into a half-day loop with the palace, Devaraja Market and Jaganmohan Palace. Late afternoon light is good for photographing the spires. Dress modestly and avoid visiting during services unless you are attending.
