Jaganmohan Palace
A 19th-century royal mansion about 200 m from Mysore Palace, now the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery.
Overview
Jaganmohan Palace is a former royal mansion near Mysore Palace that now houses the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery. This guide covers its history, collections and visiting notes.
Jaganmohan Palace, commonly known by its former name Jaganmohana Palace, is a former royal mansion that now houses the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery, an arts museum and auditorium. It lies about 200 metres west of Mysore Palace. Construction began in 1856 and was completed in 1861, making it one of the oldest modern structures in Mysuru.
The royal family used the palace as an alternative residence while renovation and construction work was underway at the main palace, and it was last inhabited by the royals in 1897, when the old Mysore Palace burned down. Later it was converted into a museum. The galleries display paintings, including works by Raja Ravi Varma, as well as artefacts and musical instruments from the royal collection.
Because of its location, the palace is easy to combine with a visit to Mysore Palace, and the surrounding streets have the old city's heritage buildings. Photography inside the gallery is reportedly not permitted, so expect to leave cameras away. Timings and ticket prices are reported inconsistently across websites, so confirm them at the gate. Allow about an hour.
