Srirangapatna

Island town and former Mysore capital with the Ranganathaswamy Temple, Tipu Sultan's summer palace and tomb.

Overview

Srirangapatna is an island town on the Kaveri about 15 km from Mysuru, known for the Ranganathaswamy Temple and Tipu Sultan's monuments. This guide lists what to see and fee notes.

Srirangapatna, also written Srirangapattana, is a town in Mandya district on an island formed by the Kaveri river, a short drive from Mysuru. It takes its name from the Ranganathaswamy Temple, consecrated around 984 CE, and was later the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore under Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan. Under British rule it was known as Seringapatam.

The Ranganathaswamy Temple is dedicated to Ranganatha, a form of Vishnu, and is one of the important Sri Vaishnavism pilgrimage sites along the Kaveri. The surrounding fort, first built by Timmanna Nayaka in 1454 and strengthened by Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan with French help, still has gateways and ramparts. Daria Daulat Bagh, Tipu Sultan's summer palace, is a teakwood building with painted frescoes on its walls and pillars and now houses a museum.

The Gumbaz, the domed tomb of Tipu Sultan and Haider Ali, stands in a garden east of the fort.

Most visitors cover Srirangapatna in half a day by taxi or auto from Mysuru, often combined with Brindavan Gardens and KRS dam. Temple etiquette applies at Ranganathaswamy, and the monuments are small enough to walk or ride between. Note that the ticket described here applies to the Summer Palace only; other sites have separate or no tickets.
