Toorji Ka Jhalra, Jodhpur
An 18th-century stepwell in Jodhpur's old city, about 300 m from Mehrangarh Fort, with carved tiers around a deep water tank.
Overview
Toorji Ka Jhalra is a carved stepwell in the old city, a short walk from Mehrangarh Fort. It is usually dated to 1740.
Toorji Ka Jhalra, also written Turji Ka Jhalra or Tanwarji Ka Jhalara, is a stepwell in the old city of Jodhpur. Some sources date it to the 6th century, but the 18th century, specifically 1740, is more widely accepted. Tradition credits Rani Tanwarji, wife of Raja Abhai Singh, though no inscription confirms either date. It lies about 100 metres west of Gulab Sagar and roughly 300 metres from Mehrangarh Fort.
Three sides of the well have descending flights of prismatic steps leading to the water reservoir, and the fourth side is a building with a large, slightly pointed arch and a blind arcade between small projecting balconies. The structure has been restored and modified repeatedly over the centuries. The tank usually fills with water only in the monsoon season, from June to September. Wikipedia notes that locals are often unfamiliar with the well's name, so a map pin helps.
