Kaylana Lake, Jodhpur
An artificial lake built in 1872, about 8 km west of Jodhpur, used for boating, picnics and winter birdwatching.
Overview
Kaylana Lake is a 19th-century reservoir west of Jodhpur, a quiet spot for sunset and winter birds.
Kaylana Lake lies about 8 km west of Jodhpur. It is an artificial lake built by Pratap Singh in 1872. Wikipedia says the area earlier held palaces and gardens made by two rulers of Jodhpur, Bhim Singh and Takhat Singh, which were destroyed to make the lake. The lake sits between igneous rock formations and is fed by the Hathi Nehar canal, which is connected to the Indira Gandhi Canal.
Natural vegetation around it is mostly babool and kumat trees, and migratory birds, including Siberian cranes according to Wikipedia, are seen in winter. Jodhpur and surrounding towns have depended on it as a source of drinking water. Incredible India lists the lake as a place for boating, fishing, picnics and birdwatching and gives hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
A travel blog says boating runs from about 9 am to 6 pm depending on weather and quotes a wide range of boat prices, which are not stored here because they could not be matched to any operator. No official entry fee was found. The lake is a popular sunset spot and is easy to combine with a drive to the western outskirts of the city.
