Sardar Government Museum, Jodhpur

A museum in Umaid Garden with Rajasthani sculptures, miniature paintings, coins and arms, in a building designed by Henry Vaughan Lanchester.

Overview

The Sardar Government Museum is Jodhpur's main state museum, housed in a 1909 Lanchester building in Umaid Garden.

The Sardar Government Museum stands in the Public Park, also called Umaid Bagh, in Jodhpur. The building was designed by the architect Henry Vaughan Lanchester in 1909 and the museum was formally opened to the public on 17 March 1936. A re-planned museum was inaugurated on 22 June 2018. The collection, per Wikipedia, includes 397 stone sculptures, 1,951 miniature paintings, 111,703 coins, 178 arms and 4,107 miscellaneous objects, as well as copper hoards from Kurda.

Ornamental pillars, or toranas, from Mandor showing Gupta-era art and Krishna Leela sculptures are among the notable pieces, along with Vishnu and Jain artefacts. Galleries are arranged by theme and include General, Animal, Industrial, Armoury, Sculpture, Historical and Mahaveer sections.

A secondary website lists hours of 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and tickets of Rs 15 for adults and Rs 5 for children, but it carries a 'cross check required' disclaimer and gives Monday as the closed day while other sites say Friday, so confirm before visiting. The museum is a good rainy-day or midday option when it is too hot to be outdoors, and can be paired with a walk in the garden.
