Pipili Appliqué Market
A craft town on the Bhubaneswar–Puri road known for colourful appliqué work (chandua) sold in roadside shops.
Overview
Pipili is the place to buy colourful appliqué crafts on the Bhubaneswar–Puri road. This guide covers what is sold and how to reach it.
Pipili, also spelt Pipli, is a small town in Puri district at the junction where the Konark road meets the Bhubaneswar–Puri highway, about 36 km from Puri and 18 km from Bhubaneswar. It is known for appliqué work, locally called chandua, in which pieces of coloured fabric are cut and stitched onto a base to make canopies, wall hangings, lampshades, umbrellas, bags and cushion covers. The main bazaar has many handicraft shops, and visitors can watch some artisans working.
Wikipedia reports a 2011 population of 17,623. The craft is also linked with the temple traditions of the Jagannath Temple and the Ratha Yatra, though that connection was not checked in a source here. Because Pipili is on the main road, most visitors stop for an hour on the way between Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark. Compare prices between shops, ask whether items are hand-stitched, and check the fabric and colourfastness before buying.
There is no ticket, and shops keep their own hours.
