Chandrabhaga Beach
A beach about 3 km east of the Konark Sun Temple, one of the first in India to receive Blue Flag certification, with an offshore coral reef.
Overview
Chandrabhaga Beach is the seafront near Konark, 3 km from the Sun Temple. It makes a natural second stop among places to visit near Puri.
Chandrabhaga Beach lies about 3 km east of the Konark Sun Temple, roughly 30 km from Puri, in Puri district. It is traditionally linked with a bathing festival, the Chandrabhaga Mela, held around February, and was once considered a place of natural cure for lepers. Wikipedia reports that it became India's first beach to receive Blue Flag certification, a tag for clean beaches with international-standard amenities.
Offshore lies the Chandrabhaga coral reef, one of the living reefs off India's coast. The beach is a natural pairing with the temple: many visitors see Konark in the morning and walk or take an auto-rickshaw to the sea in the afternoon. There is no official visitor information in the sources read, and the beach is a public coastline, so treat swimming with caution, as the Bay of Bengal surf and currents can be strong.
Fishermen use the shore, and small stalls sell snacks near the access road. Sunrise is the most popular time because the sun rises directly over the sea.
