Vashisht Temple and Hot Springs

Vashisht, just across the Beas from Manali, is known for its sulphur hot-spring baths beside old temples. Rooftop cafes line the lanes, and a trail leads up to Jogini Falls.

Vashisht is a small village about 2 to 3 km from Manali on the far side of the River Beas, reached by a paved road or footpath from the Manali market. It is named after the sage Vashisht, who is mentioned in the Rig Veda, and is best known for its sulphurous hot springs. Beside the springs stand three main temples, dedicated to Vashisht, Shiva and Rama. The Vashisht temple faces the Rama temple across the lane.

The spring water is piped into public bathing tanks, with separate baths for men and women, and many visitors take a dip in the belief that the water eases skin conditions, aches and pains. The lane up to the temples is lined with shops, cafes and guesthouses, and Himachal Tourism notes that the village has some of the best rooftop restaurants in the area, with views across the valley.

Above the main village are older houses and apple orchards, and a trail leads on to Jogini Falls. Remember that the baths are part of a religious site: dress modestly around the temples, follow bathing customs, and ask before taking photographs, especially near the bathing tanks.
