Science City, Kolkata
Science City is among India's largest science centres, with exhibition halls, a planetarium, a science park and a 3D theatre.
Overview
Science City is one of the best places to visit in Kolkata with children, a 49.6-acre science centre with halls, a planetarium and a science park.
Science City on J.B.S. Haldane Avenue is described by Wikipedia as the largest science centre in the Indian subcontinent. It covers 49.6 acres and opened in two phases: the convention centre on 21 December 1996 and the rest on 1 July 1997.
Attractions include the Space Odyssey planetarium under a 23-metre dome, the Dynamotion Hall with exhibits on illusions and the powers of ten, a freshwater aquarium and butterfly enclave, the Earth Exploration Hall (2008), the Science Exploration Hall (2016) on emerging technologies and evolution, a Maritime Centre and an outdoor Science Park with rides. A 2,232-seat Grand Theatre sits in the convention complex.
The official ticket page lists the 3D Digital Theatre at INR 150 for general visitors with shows between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM, while the general entry ticket is given only as an image; a travel site's snippet gives INR 40 per person and opening 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with ticket counters closing at 6:00 PM. Individual attractions are ticketed separately, so budget for a few shows.
It is a good choice for families and for a rainy-day plan, and it lies on the eastern side of the city near the Bypass, so allow travel time from the centre.
