Overview
St. Paul's Cathedral is one of the quieter places to visit in Kolkata, an Indo-Gothic Anglican cathedral near the Maidan. This guide covers its history, location and visiting notes.
St. Paul's Cathedral is a Church of North India cathedral of Anglican background and the seat of the Diocese of Calcutta. Its cornerstone was laid in 1839 and the building was completed in 1847; Wikipedia says it is regarded as the largest church in Kolkata and the first Anglican cathedral in Asia. The design is described as Indo-Gothic, a Gothic style adapted to the Indian climate. After the earthquakes of 1897 and 1934, the building was rebuilt to a revised design.
The complex includes a library over the western porch and a display of art forms and memorabilia, and the burials include Bishop Daniel Wilson, who founded the cathedral. It stands on Cathedral Road in the area the article calls the island of attractions, a few minutes' walk from Maidan Metro station and close to the Victoria Memorial.
