Victoria Memorial

A white-marble memorial and museum built 1906–1921 on the Maidan, set in 26 hectares of gardens.

Overview

The Victoria Memorial is among the best-known places to visit in Kolkata: a marble museum and 26-hectare garden on the Maidan. This guide lists timings, closed days and ticket prices checked against the official site where possible.

The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building on Kolkata's Maidan, entered from Queen's Way. It was built between 1906 and 1921 and dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria; work on the superstructure began in 1910 and was entrusted to Martin & Co. of Calcutta. Wikipedia describes it as the largest monument to a monarch anywhere in the world, standing in about 26 hectares (64 acres) of gardens, and notes its Indo-Saracenic architecture.

It is now a museum run under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The memorial's own site lists the gallery hours as 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with the galleries closed on Mondays and designated national holidays, and the gardens open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The Memorial publishes separate museum and garden tickets, and a projection mapping show is listed as an extra ticket.

Most visitors combine the galleries with a walk around the grounds, which are also used by early-morning walkers on annual passes. The Maidan, St. Paul's Cathedral and the Park Street area lie a short distance away, so it fits easily into a day of central Kolkata sightseeing. Expect queues on weekends and holidays; buying tickets online or arriving at opening time shortens the wait.
