Jorasanko Thakur Bari
The Tagore family's ancestral home and birthplace of Rabindranath Tagore, now home to the Rabindra Bharati Museum.
Overview
Jorasanko Thakur Bari is a key literary place to visit in Kolkata, the home where Rabindranath Tagore was born. Official museum timings and fees are listed below.
Jorasanko Thakur Bari, the House of the Thakurs (Tagores), is a Bengali haveli in Jorasanko, north Kolkata, and the ancestral home of the Tagore family. It is the birthplace of Rabindranath Tagore and today hosts a campus of Rabindra Bharati University. Wikipedia describes it as built in a traditional Bengali dalan style and as a heritage icon of the city.
The Rabindra Bharati Museum inside the complex is run by the university: its page lists hours of 10:30 am to 5 pm (last ticket 4:30 pm) and closure on Mondays, government holidays and a few university days.
Tickets are INR 20 for students (India and SAARC), INR 50 for adults and INR 500 for foreign visitors outside SAARC; a still-photography coupon costs INR 50 for India and SAARC visitors and INR 100 for others, and photography is allowed only outside the museum building and in the courtyard. Entry is free for visitors with disabilities, street children and children under 3. The nearest metro station is Girish Park.
Marble Palace and the north Kolkata lanes are close, so the house fits into a heritage walk.
