Virupaksha Temple, Hampi

Hampi's main living temple, dedicated to Virupaksha (Shiva), on the south bank of the Tungabhadra at the head of Hampi Bazaar.

Overview

The Virupaksha Temple is the oldest continuously worshipped shrine in Hampi and the usual first stop on a visit. This guide covers its history, what to see, and what we could and could not verify about charges.

The Virupaksha Temple, also called the Pampapati temple, sits on the south bank of the Tungabhadra at the western end of Hampi Bazaar. Wikipedia describes it as the main centre of pilgrimage at Hampi, dedicated to Virupaksha, a form of Shiva, with a history running from about the 7th century CE: the Virupaksha–Pampa sanctuary predates the Vijayanagara capital and a small shrine grew into a large complex under the Vijayanagara rulers.

The Archaeological Survey of India calls it the largest extant temple at Hampi and notes that it is still in worship and that its tall entrance tower is attributed to Krishnadeva Raya. Unlike most of the Vijayanagara ruins, it has never stopped being used, so visitors find daily rituals, priests, and pilgrims alongside the carved halls.

ASI notes that the temples of the city were provided with widespread bazaars flanked by storeyed mandapas, and Hampi Bazaar still leads to the temple gateway. Hemakuta Hill and Matanga Hill give views over the complex. Remove footwear before the inner courtyards and dress modestly; photography and camera charges are set by the temple, so check on arrival.
